Rusk Rehabilitation Center Restores Hope for Stroke Patients
COLUMBIA, Mo. – May is National Stroke Awareness Month and Rusk Rehabilitation Center, a joint venture of HealthSouth and the University of Missouri – Columbia, joins other HealthSouth inpatient rehabilitation hospitals across the country to promote awareness and educate the public on stroke prevention and the difference rehabilitation can make in a patient’s recovery after stroke.
According to the recent adult stroke rehabilitation guidelines released by the American Heart Association, whenever possible, stroke patients should be treated at an in-patient rehabilitation facility rather than a skilled nursing facility. While at an in-patient rehabilitation facility, a patient participates in at least three hours of rehabilitation a day from physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists. Nurses are continuously available and doctors typically visit daily. An in-patient rehabilitation facility may be a free-standing facility or a separate unit of a hospital. Stroke is the leading cause of serious, long-term disability and the fifth-leading cause of death in the United States. Rusk Rehabilitation Center is working to change those statistics by providing a few tips to help reduce your risk of stroke including:
- Eat healthy to maintain a healthy weight
- Exercise regularly with doctor’s approval
- Keep diabetes blood sugar levels in check
- Limit alcohol consumption
- Maintain a healthy blood pressure
- Stop smoking
- Treat high cholesterol
Rusk Rehabilitation Center has also been designated as a HealthSouth Stroke Center of Excellence. HealthSouth hospitals receiving this internal recognition go above and beyond standards and expectations to provide a vast array of stroke-related programs and services, exceeding established benchmarks in clinical programming and patient outcomes for the treatment of stroke. Some of those benchmarks include the program being led by specially trained personnel including a board-certified physician and certified rehabilitation registered nurses (CRRN®s). The hospital must be awarded Disease-Specific Care Certification in Stroke Rehabilitation from The Joint Commission, in order to be eligible for this award. These hospitals also lead the company in patient satisfaction and offer a variety of educational programs to the community.
